Do You Need New Rotors With New Brake Pads?
Getting your car or truck moving is important. Getting it stopped is considerably more important.
So when we tell someone at Honest-1 Auto Care Mooresville that their brake pads are getting thin, one of the next questions we often hear is:
“Does that mean I need rotors, too?”
Not necessarily.
Brake pads normally wear faster than brake rotors, and there are situations where pads can be replaced without replacing the rotors. But there are also very good reasons why brake pads and rotors are commonly replaced together on today's vehicles.
The important thing isn't automatically replacing everything—or automatically trying to save the old rotors. It's looking at the actual condition of your brakes and making the right recommendation for your vehicle.
Brake Pads and Rotors Do Different Jobs—Together
When you step on the brake pedal, the brake caliper squeezes the brake pads against the rotor. The friction between the pad and the spinning rotor slows the wheel and stops the vehicle.
That friction also creates heat and wear.
Brake pads are designed to be the primary wear item, so they generally wear out before the rotors. But rotors wear, too. Over time they can become thinner, develop grooves or uneven surfaces, corrode, or contribute to vibration or pulsation when braking.
That's why checking brakes isn't simply a matter of looking at the pads and asking, “How much is left?”
We need to consider the condition of the braking system working with them.
Can You Replace Brake Pads Without Replacing the Rotors?
Sometimes, yes.
If the rotors are in good condition, meet the vehicle manufacturer's specifications, have an acceptable braking surface, and there aren't other problems with the braking system, replacing only the brake pads may be appropriate.
But we don't make that decision simply because replacing pads alone costs less.
And we don't automatically sell someone rotors just because we're replacing their brake pads.
We look at what's actually on the vehicle.
Rotor thickness matters. Surface condition matters. Uneven wear matters. Heat damage and corrosion matter. The way the vehicle behaves when you brake matters.
If you've told us the steering wheel shakes when braking at highway speed, the brake pedal pulsates coming to a stop, or you've started hearing a noise that wasn't there last week, we want to know that, too.
Those symptoms help our technicians understand what the vehicle is doing—not just what the parts look like while it's sitting in the shop.
Why Are Brake Rotors Replaced More Often Today?
Years ago, resurfacing—or “turning”—brake rotors was extremely common. A technician could machine a small amount of material from a rotor to restore a smoother braking surface and reuse it with new pads.
That isn't always the best option today.
Many modern rotors don't have as much extra material available for machining. A rotor may already be approaching its minimum allowable thickness by the time the brake pads need replacement. Removing additional material may leave it too close to—or below—the manufacturer's specification.
There's also a practical question we consider:
Does resurfacing actually make sense for this repair?
Between the labor required to machine a rotor and the cost of quality replacement rotors, replacement is often the better long-term choice.
We're interested in more than getting your car out of the shop today. We want the new pads to have a proper surface to work against and the completed brake job to perform the way it should.
Saving a little money today isn't much of a bargain if you're back later with brake noise, vibration or uneven wear.
What Do We Look for When We Check Your Brakes?
When your vehicle comes into Honest-1 Mooresville, our normal vehicle inspection includes a visual inspection of the brakes where visible.
We are not removing all four wheels and performing a complete brake inspection every time you bring your vehicle to us. That's an important distinction.
If what we see—or what you've told us you're experiencing—indicates that the brakes need a closer look, we may recommend a more complete brake inspection so we can properly evaluate the system.
Depending on the vehicle and the concern, our technicians may be looking for things such as:
- Remaining brake-pad material
- Rotor surface condition
- Uneven brake wear
- Grooves, scoring, rust or corrosion
- Evidence of overheating
- Brake-fluid condition or leakage
- Caliper or brake-hardware concerns
- Brake hoses or other visible problems
- Symptoms such as noise, pulling, vibration or pulsation
And we don't want you simply taking our word for it.

It's much easier to make a good decision about your vehicle when you understand what we're seeing and why we're recommending something.
What About Brake Fluid?
Brake fluid doesn't get nearly as much attention as brake pads and rotors, but it's an important part of the same system.
Brake fluid transfers the force from your brake pedal through the hydraulic braking system so the brakes can do their job. Over time, brake fluid can absorb moisture and its condition can deteriorate.
There's something else that's important about how we handle fluids at our shop.
Windshield washer fluid is the only fluid we routinely top off.
If another fluid is low, we'd rather understand why it's low than simply fill the reservoir and send you on your way.
Brake fluid is a good example. The level in the reservoir can change as brake pads wear, but an unusually low level can also indicate a leak or another condition that needs attention.
Simply adding fluid can hide information our technicians need to properly evaluate the vehicle.

What Are the Warning Signs You May Need Brake Repair?
Don't wait for the brake pedal to hit the floor before thinking about your brakes.
Let us know if you notice:
- Squealing or grinding
- A brake warning light
- Vibration or pulsation while braking
- The vehicle pulling while braking
- A soft, low or unusual brake-pedal feel
- Longer stopping distances
- A burning smell after braking
- Anything that simply feels different when you stop
A grinding noise deserves particularly quick attention. Once the brake-pad friction material is gone, metal-to-metal contact can damage the rotor and turn what might have been a routine brake repair into a more expensive one.
And because brakes are a safety system, some symptoms shouldn't wait until your next oil change.
Do You Always Need Pads and Rotors Together?
No—and that's really the answer to the question we started with.
Sometimes you need brake pads. Sometimes you need pads and rotors. Sometimes the problem isn't the pads or rotors at all.
We don't think there's much value in deciding which repair you need before we've inspected the vehicle.
Our job is to determine what your brakes need to stop safely and perform properly, explain what we're seeing, and help you make an informed decision.
