What started as wet carpet turned into a complete dashboard removal.
Many drivers assume water on the passenger-side floor means a leaking windshield or heater core. On this 2009 Pontiac, the culprit was much simpler—and much more hidden: a clogged air conditioning evaporator drain.
The Customer's Concern
The owner noticed water accumulating on the front floorboards after using the air conditioner. At first it seemed like a minor inconvenience, but standing water inside a vehicle can quickly become a much larger problem.
Common symptoms include:
- Wet carpet on the passenger side

How the A/C Drain Works
Every time you use your air conditioner, moisture is removed from the air. That condensation collects on the evaporator core inside the HVAC housing and normally drains harmlessly underneath the vehicle through a small drain tube.
When that drain becomes blocked by:
- Dirt
- Leaves
- Pollen
- Debris
- Mold or biological growth
the water has nowhere to go except inside the passenger compartment.
Why This Repair Was So Involved
Unfortunately, on this Pontiac, the blockage could not be cleared externally.
As these photos show, Nick- our technician had to perform extensive disassembly to gain access to the HVAC housing.
The repair required:
- Removal of much of the dashboard
- Disconnecting electrical components and wiring harnesses
- Removing structural dash supports
- Accessing the HVAC housing
- Replacing the clogged evaporator drain and housing
- Reassembling and testing the entire system
Although the actual blockage was small, reaching it required many hours of labor.
The Hidden Danger: Mold
One of the biggest concerns with water inside a vehicle is mold growth.
The carpet may feel only slightly damp, but underneath it is thick padding that acts like a sponge. Once saturated, it can remain wet for days or even weeks.
Mold can:
- Produce unpleasant odors
- Trigger allergies

If caught early, the interior can often be dried before mold becomes established.
